# Organizational tree

> Your organization's tree of departments, positions, roles, and responsibilities, how they attach, and how object codes help you find them.

Every organization in exIQtive has an organizational tree made of organizational objects. The tree is how you organize readiness across your company, and how employees receive their work.

## Organizational objects

| Object | Description | How to manage |
| - | - | - |
| Department | Groups positions into a nested hierarchy (company, division, team) that mirrors your organization's structure. Departments contain positions and sub-departments. | [Departments](/organization/departments) |
| Position | Describes the roles and responsibilities an employee should have when they occupy it. Positions have roles attached, and can also have responsibilities attached directly. | [Positions](/organization/positions) |
| Role | A collection of responsibilities an employee needs to fulfill. Roles have responsibilities attached. | [Roles](/organization/roles) |
| Responsibility | A specific area of work. Responsibilities have Inspection Protocols attached. | [Managing responsibilities](/responsibilities/managing-responsibilities) |
| Job Family | Groups positions by discipline, with ordered levels for seniority. | [Job families](/organization/job-families) |
| Job Category | Groups positions that represent work of equal value. | [Job categories](/organization/job-categories) |

All six share one numbering system. See [Organizational object codes](#organizational-object-codes).

## Attachments

* A department can contain positions, sub-departments, or both, at any depth.
* A position can belong to only one department at a time. A position that isn't placed in a department is unassigned.
* A responsibility can be attached to multiple roles.
* A role can be attached to multiple positions.
* A responsibility can also be attached directly to a position.
* When you assign an employee to a position, they're automatically assigned its roles, the responsibilities attached to those roles, and any responsibilities attached directly to the position.
* An employee's responsibilities come from the position, not from its department. Moving a position between departments doesn't change them.

## Organizational object codes

Each department, position, role, responsibility, job family, and job category has a unique numeric code (like **#345**) within your organization. Codes are assigned by the system, never change, and are never reused. All six types share one numbering, so no two objects have the same code. Use codes to find organizational objects quickly and precisely; you can search by code. The full rules are in [Organizational concepts](/concepts/organization#organizational-object-codes).

## Common questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="How do departments fit into the organizational tree?">
    Departments sit at the top of the tree and organize positions into a hierarchy for navigation and filtering. The chain through which employees receive their work is position, then roles, then responsibilities. Departments don't affect which responsibilities an employee holds.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How does an employee receive a responsibility?">
    Through their position: the employee is assigned to a position, and receives every responsibility in the roles attached to it, plus any responsibility attached directly to the position. Responsibilities are never assigned directly to an employee.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can the same role be used in multiple positions?">
    Yes. A role can be attached to any number of positions. Define it once with its responsibilities and reuse it wherever it's needed.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What is an organizational object code used for?">
    Each department, position, role, responsibility, job family, and job category has a unique numeric code (like #345). Codes make it easy to find and refer to specific objects precisely, especially in large organizations where names can be similar across departments.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can a responsibility appear in more than one role?">
    Yes. If the same responsibility is in two roles that are both attached to the same position, the employee receives it twice, once for each role. Each role generates its own independent assignment.
  </Accordion>
